Close Up of Old 1940s or 1950s Perfume Bottle
I'm not sure if this is Persian painting on a perfume bottle, or Russian or Prussian? or Ukrainian?Someone help me out, please. It is a King, a Tsar? There are pointy feet, and what looks like stylized peacocks. He is not really with a white background. He is painted on a clear bottle. I tried to make it so you could see him, and not a lot of glare and my fingers. I'm posting another picture to show the ornamentation on the bottle cap. There is a small crown with a cross on top. Anyway, this goes to the group about items that have always been around. And so will its companion picture. My father had this on his part of whatever bathroom counter we ever had, through lots of moves. I am 58, and cannot remember a time when it wasn't around. It was always empty too. I never cared much for the stale old fragrance, but I was always intrigued by the bottle. It just sort of represented my Dad. I think everyone in the family had this unspoken respect not to break it or hurt it. My father died in 1995, and not too long after, when I went to Texas to bury his ashes (from Oregon), my mother gave me this bottle. I had to ask for it. She was about to sell out everything, and I said do you have to sell that and the orange bubble bowl? and the pretty bottle Dad always had in the bathroom? Anyway, I got it and do not keep it in a bathroom because of the moisture, but rather I keep it in a living room on a book shelf.
My mother said, when I asked her about it, that department stores used to have some pretty nice looking bottles for sample sprays of their perfume (parfum). She, or a good friend of hers, often were allowed to keep the bottles. They worked at some pretty swank stores sometimes, like I. Magnin, or City of Paris (in San Francisco). I'm guessing it dates from late 1940s or very early 1950s. This little story represents my effort at "My Story" and "My Life As" the person in the family most interested in memorabilia, heirlooms, photographs, etc. This story is from the one I did that shows the male character the best. It applies to most of this picture too. Oh, I meant to say this perfume bottle is not tiny. It is maybe 6 to 8 inches tall, and an inch and half or two inches diameter. (802parfumsdaleonbottleclosecutoutmyfingers) There is a typo in there. It should say De Leon not Da Leon.
I put it on snap game because of the stylized cross on top.
Make Your Own...
In a combination of luck and bad circumstances, A wedding photographer friend had become very ill in the late hours before a wedding he was to photograph the next day.
Ringing phones all hours of the night had me on edge.
However I was available - I was free - I was able to take over - and thats what friends are for...
Here we have an image, that although not staged, it wasn't without help. Doug Gordon has this series where he discusses the "Posed PhotoJournalism" and calls it the oxymoron. This instantly came to mind when I tried to create this image with only available light coming through the windows... however there wasn't enough available light to get me the effect I was looking for...
This is where the lighting assistant comes in. Armed with a QFlash and a 2x2 battery pack, on the famous "Light Stick" - he ducked down in the corner of the room, near the window and waited, with his eyes closed.
I photographed with available light while waiting for the makeup artist to grab the long/tall can of hair spray and then switch the the Pocket Wizard to the correct channel and fire a few frames.
There was no need to tell the bride to close her eyes so that she was not blinded by the light, she was already trying to close them so that she wasn't burned by the hair spray...
So, we end up with, a neat image, a bit different and maybe just a tad inspired by Mr. Ryan Brenizer, but still created without a "set up" of people - just a nice powerful light.
